Can AI Work Side by Side During a Sound Check?

We tested AI-assisted live sound against a 40-year veteran. The results surprised everyone — and proved why both matter.

We ran an experiment at a 200-cap room in Phoenix. Same band, same PA, two sound checks back to back. First pass: me, a single RTA on my phone, and 40 years of habit. Second pass: an AI-assisted system that analyzes the room, suggests EQ curves, and auto-notches feedback frequencies.

The AI got the room flat in about four minutes. It took me closer to twelve. On raw speed, it won.

But here's where it got interesting. The AI tuned the system to a measurement — a flat response curve. The band walked on stage and the first song sounded... correct. Clean. And completely lifeless.

The three moves the AI didn't suggest

I made three moves the AI didn't suggest: I pulled 2dB out of the low-mids where the bass guitar was piling up, added a touch of 4kHz on the lead vocal to cut through the guitars, and delayed the drum overheads by a few samples to align with the snare. None of those came from a measurement. They came from knowing what the song was supposed to feel like.

The result: the second pass measured 'worse' on the analyzer and sounded dramatically better.

So can AI work side by side during a sound check? Yes — and it should. Use it to get the room balanced fast. Then trust your ears for the part that actually matters: making the music hit. The AI is your assistant. You're still the engineer.

Sit right in the center of the second balcony and close your eyes while the stage is being set. Listen for the 'bloom'—the way the room's shoebox shape catches the low-end resonance and holds it just long enough to feel warm without getting muddy. That's a physical sensation an AI can plot on a graph but can't actually 'feel' like you do.
