BOB'S RULE
Treat the room first
🎙️ Microphones
Your mic choice defines your sound more than any other piece of gear. Start here.
Shure SM58
BEGINNER PICKThe industry standard for a reason. Nearly indestructible, sounds great anywhere, handles feedback like a champ.
Audio-Technica AT2020
BEGINNER PICKThe best condenser under $100, period. Crystal clear detail for vocals and acoustic instruments in a treated room.
Shure SM7B
Michael Jackson's Thriller was recorded on this mic. Used by top podcasters and home studio pros worldwide.
🎛️ Audio Interfaces
Your interface is the bridge between your microphone and your computer. Don't skip this.
Focusrite Scarlett Solo (4th Gen)
BEGINNER PICKPlug-and-play simplicity, excellent preamp quality, works with every DAW. Bob's top recommendation for beginners.
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (4th Gen)
BEGINNER PICKTwo inputs means you can record guitar and vocals simultaneously. The most popular interface in the world for a reason.
Universal Audio Volt 276
Onboard 1176-style compression means your recordings sound polished before they even hit your DAW.
🎧 Headphones
Monitoring headphones are tuned flat — not for listening pleasure. This matters a lot.
Sony MDR-7506
BEGINNER PICKA classic for 30+ years. Found in every major recording studio. Accurate, comfortable, and extremely durable.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x
Extended frequency response and detachable cables. A step up when you're ready to start taking your mixes seriously.
🔊 Studio Monitors
Room treatment matters as much as the monitors. Read Bob's room setup guide first.
Yamaha HS5
Brutal honesty from these speakers — if your mix sounds good on HS5s, it sounds good everywhere. Bob's daily drivers.
PreSonus Eris E3.5
BEGINNER PICKSurprisingly accurate for the price. Perfect starter monitors when headphones aren't enough but a full setup isn't in budget yet.
🎸 Accessories & Cables
Bad cables cause more problems than bad gear. Don't cheap out here.
Mogami Gold Studio XLR Cable
BEGINNER PICKMogami is what professional studios use. Quiet, durable, and actually worth the money.
On-Stage DS7200B Desk Stand
BEGINNER PICKStable, adjustable, doesn't tip. Keeps your mic in the right position so you don't have to think about it.
Bob's Setup Tips
Start with a mic + interface, not monitors
Headphones are better than untreated-room monitors. Buy great cans first and save monitors for when you've treated your room.
Your room is your most important instrument
A $99 mic in a well-treated room beats a $500 mic in a live, reverberant room every single time. Fix the room first.
Resist the gear upgrade trap
Pros make great music on basic gear. Spend 90% of your first year learning to use what you have. Upgrades come later.
Use free DAW software first
GarageBand (Mac) and Audacity are free and professional enough to get you started. Don't buy Pro Tools on day one.
Buy from stores with return policies
Sweetwater and B&H have excellent support and return windows. Your ears will tell you if something isn't right.
