Why Your Home Studio Sounds Bad (And the Free Fix)

Most home studios have the same three problems. None of them require buying new gear to fix. Bob walks through the zero-cost solution.

If your mixes sound great in your room but fall apart in the car, the problem isn't your gear. It's your room. And the fix is free.

Almost every bad-sounding home studio shares the same three issues.

1. Your speakers are against the wall

Low frequencies build up at boundaries. When your monitors sit inches from a wall, the bass gets boomy and undefined. Pull them out at least a foot — two is better — and listen to the difference. That alone fixes more mixes than any plugin.

2. You're sitting in the wrong spot

There's a sweet spot — the midpoint between your speakers, forming an equilateral triangle with your head. Sit too close or too far and the frequency balance shifts. Mark the spot with tape. Always mix from there.

3. Your room is reflecting everything

Hard parallel walls create flutter echo and comb filtering. You hear the room more than the speaker. Hang a heavy blanket behind you and one behind the speakers. Moving blankets from the hardware store work. It won't look like a pro studio, but it'll reveal what your mixes actually sound like.

Do those three things before you spend a dollar. I've walked into hundred-thousand-dollar rooms that sounded worse than a $300 setup in a treated corner. The room is the instrument. Tune it first.

When your room tells you the truth, your mixes translate everywhere. That's the whole game.
